YWCA sends fundraising Christmas card message

A community centre is urging people to raise money for charity by not sending Christmas cards.

Lochend YWCA has sent e-mail Christmas messages this year and is urging people to do the same, and donate the money which would have been spent on cards and stamps.

The centre is taking part in YWCA Scotland's "Go Card Free" to support YWCA Malawi's work with girls and young women through their literacy, poverty and HIV/AIDS projects.

Members have already donated funds to help their counterparts in Malawi buy a water well for a rural village and sent shoeboxes filled with essential items for their literacy and healthcare projects.

YWCA Lochend manager Sarah Cross: "Having seen the resources and conditions that YWCA Malawi work under I am completely bowled over by their achievements in their local branches. The commitment of the volunteers and members alike is phenomenal."
