West Edinburgh Junior Warden Scheme

posted 13 Aug 2009, 04:12 by myEdinburgh Admin
The West Edinburgh Community Safety Team and Environmental Wardens have developed and launched a pilot Junior Warden Scheme. Through this scheme we hope to ensure that the children of the City are given the right information about their community, which improves their understanding of where they live.

This pilot project funded by a Youth Work Matrix Funding Agreement began with the first 6 Junior Wardens from Kirkliston Primary School beginning this exiting project in April 2009.

They will then be followed by 6 Pupils from Queensferry Primary School.

These children will be VIPs: - Very Important Pupils! as the first from any schools in Edinburgh.

The Junior Warden Schemes Aims:-
  • Develop active citizenship, promoting a strong sense of community pride.
  • Promote greater public awareness of environmental issues through the children.
  • Reduce young people's involvement in crime and antisocial behavior.
The scheme is aimed at P-7 children and is run over 6 weeks.

The scheme content is divided into 5 parts:
  1. Environmental
  2. Police & Antisocial behaviour
  3. Fire Service
  4. Drink & Drugs
  5. Junior Wardens on Patrol
The children are supervised at all times.. They are also provided with suitable clothing and equipment for the role of Junior Warden. The children are also given a workbook which they are encouraged to work through that is divided into the 5 main parts of the programme. Throughout the workbook there are several competitions and quizzes for which prizes are given. The children will visit a Police Station, Fire Station and many other locations in the West of the City.
