It is hoped work on Princes Street will be completed by November 2009

Edinburgh councillors are to decide whether Princes Street should close to traffic for much of next year to allow tram tracks to be laid.

It is hoped a full closure of the city centre's main shopping street would ensure work is completed more quickly.

A review group had considered keeping a westbound lane open for buses. However, this option would extend tram works into 2010, rather than November 2009.

Work to move utilities has already caused more than a year of disruption.

When work starts again after Christmas it is likely Princes Street will be completely shut, with full diversions in place from February.

City transport spokesman Phil Wheeler said it was the right way to get the job done.
