Taxi warning after teen raped

The city's regulatory leader has issued a warning about trying to hail private hire cars on the Capital's streets.

The move from Councillor Colin Keir follows claims by a teenage girl that she was raped by a bogus private hire car driver on her way home from a night out last weekend.

The 19-year-old has told police how she hailed what she believed to be a private hire car outside a nightclub in the centre of Edinburgh and was then driven to a remote spot, where she was subjected to a terrifying assault in the car.

A police investigation into the attack is ongoing.

Councillor Keir said: "The public need to be clear that it is just not worth taking the risk.

"If you are taking a private hire car then the only option is to phone for them in advance."
