Take extra care in the snow

posted 29 Nov 2010, 06:00 by Alistar Frater

NHS Lothian is urging patients, visitors and staff to take extra care when travelling in the snow today.

Travel should be restricted to journeys which are necessary, and public transport should be used where possible.

One GP surgery, Kirkliston Medical Practice in West Lothian, is closed due to the weather.

Patients who would usually attend Kirkliston Medical Practice should contact NHS 24on 08454 24 24 24 if they need urgent health advice.

Some other GP practices may be offering a restricted service, please call to check before you travel to the practice.

Most hospital services are running as normal, but patients should contact the number on their appointment letter to check that the clinic is running.

If patients are unable to attend their hospital appointments they should call the number on the appointment letter.

For urgent medical advice please call your GP surgery or NHS 24 on 08454 242424.

In an emergency please call 999.

Further updates will be posted online at as soon as we have more information.

Prof Charles Swainson, Medical Director, NHS Lothian, said:

“We know that travelling conditions have been difficult today, and we would urge people to use public transport where they can, and to only travel where necessary.

“We are working to clear the snow from the car parks and roads on our sites, and I would urge people to bear with us while we do this.

“One GP practice is closed and some others may be running a restricted service, so patients should check with their local practice, or call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24 for medical advice.”
