Storms set to batter the city

Edinburgh is today bracing itself for gales and downpours as a wild weather system sweeps in from the Atlantic.

Heavy rain was set to make today a washout for many, with those heading for the hills being warned of snow showers.

The band of rain was expected to cover the whole of the UK, reaching Scotland by lunchtime.

Gusts of up to 90mph are predicted in some areas and motorists are being warned to take care, particularly on exposed stretches of road and bridges.

The rain and wind is expected to continue into the night, easing later to become clearer with occasional wintry showers.

The Met Office said tomorrow will be bright but cold, with sunny spells and scattered sleet.
