Royal Botanic Gardens: Education Open Days - 16 & 17 August

posted 16 Aug 2010, 04:41 by myEdinburgh Admin
Adult education classes ranging from botanical art to diplomas in horticulture are on offer at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).

Tutors will be present at an Open Evening on Monday 16th August to provide information about all the part and full-time courses on offer and help people sign up for the coming year. It will be held in the Conference Room, Science Buildings, Inverleith Row between 6pm and 8pm.

The information displays will remain up the following day, Tuesday 17 August with access from 9.30am. Bookings can be made in person up to 2pm.

Education administrator, Kirsten Price said: “Adult education is something we at RBGE are keen to promote and encourage. We provide a wide range of courses to cater to the varying needs of students. For instance, our part-time courses are popular with people who have week-day work commitments or young parents who can fit studying around their family life. Our full-time courses appeal to young people who, for instance, want to pursue a career in horticulture. We also have mature students seeking a change of career or just wanting to pursue their interests.’’

She added: “Some people who have not studied for a while may be nervous about signing up for an educational course. However, we will be on hand at the Open Evening to give advice and encouragement. We will also help them with the booking procedure. Many of our courses are eligible for those with Individual Learning Accounts, so they may not have to pay.’’

RBGE has provided professional training since its origins as a late 17th century physic garden, training doctors and apothecaries of the day. RBGE now offers one of the world's most comprehensive ranges of courses for anyone wanting to learn more about botany, horticulture, garden design or botanical illustration taught by experts in their field.

Input from expert research staff ensures that students are trained in both the fundamental skills and most up-to date techniques in each discipline.
