Paint Can on Wheels Rides into Town

The Travelling Gallery begins its autumn tour in Edinburgh with an exhibition devoted to paint.

Paint Can is a colourful and fun exhibition which looks at how some artists are currently using paint and how the seductive qualities of paint can be used within other media including animation, drawing, installation and performance.

Exhibits include two small textural paintings by Alexis Harding, recent winner of the John Moores Painting prize, three very painterly animations by Dutch artist Jacco Olivier, plus a drawing and painting of the same image by Glasgow based artist Carol Rhodes.

Also onboard the gallery/bus is a film by George Barber called Automotive Action Painting where cars are used instead of brushes to create a giant abstract painting on the road. Edinburgh based artist Michael Craik is showing a series of 4 spray painted etched aluminium panels which are based on patterns found in Arabic architecture and, Miranda Blennerhassett will paint directly on to the walls of the gallery inspired by the architecture of the interior. Other artists are Ufuk Gueray and Christopher Stevens who both show an extreme passion for paint in very different ways.

Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture Convenor, said: "With Paint Can, the Travelling Gallery has come up with another fascinating and thought-provoking exhibition. I look forward to seeing the Gallery attract crowds from across Edinburgh before it sets off on its autumn tour around Scotland."

Alison Chisholm, Travelling Gallery Curator, said: "I think everyone will find something to enjoy in this exhibition. Despite being very different in their treatment of materials and ideas, the eight exhibiting artists demonstrate their fascination with paint and give us an opportunity to revisit a familiar medium but still be surprised."

The Travelling Gallery will start its tour in Edinburgh on Monday 24th August and will visit a different venue in the City each day. It will also be participating in ART LATE on Thursday 27th when it will be parked on Infirmary Street near the Dovecot until 9pm.
