Last reminder to stock up on vital medicine

Local people are being given a last reminder to ensure they have collected vital medicines ahead of the annual festive closures of GPs' surgeries.

The Be Ready for Winter campaign, launched earlier this year by television personality Sarah Heaney and Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Nicola Sturgeon, wants people to beat the winter bugs by self-caring, and planning ahead for the two four-day closures over Christmas and New Year.

The NHS is also reminding people that, while surgeries will be closed for four days from December 25-28 and again from January 1-4, out-of-hours services across Lothian are prepared for the festive break, with out-of-hours GPs and clinical staff delivering services during the holidays.

The campaign advises people to self-care over winter by restocking their medicine cabinet and plan ahead for repeat prescriptions.

Be Ready for Winter also encourages people to ask pharmacists for help in treating common winter ailments.

Dr Charles Swainson, medical director, NHS Lothian, said: "If the issue is an emergency, or life-threatening, our Accident and Emergency services are available to provide life-saving care."
