A shopping centre in West Edinburgh has picked up a Keep Edinburgh Clean Gold Award after demonstrating its 'clean and green' credentials.

The Westside Plaza in Wester Hailes had already achieved a Silver KEC gong late last year. They were awarded the 'Gold' earlier this month after stepping up their efforts with initiatives like clean-ups and a publicity campaign promoting their commitment to improving their local environment.

As well as working hard to spruce up the Plaza's visual appearance, janitorial staff carried out clean-ups at the nearby canal towpath, returning with several bagfulls of litter.

Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environment Leader, said: "Congratulations to everyone at Westside Plaza for all their hard work and commitment in striving for this Keep Edinburgh Clean accolade. They've done a tremendous job to convert their Silver into a Gold in such a short space of time and should feel rightly proud of themselves for setting such a good example for other Edinburgh businesses to follow."

John Lynch, Westside Plaza Centre Manager, said: "Getting this recognition from the Council is a wonderful achievement and reflects on the hard work and dedication of the janitorial staff. We are building on this success. We recently introduced a system to help monitor the level of cleanliness throughout the centre. We want to try and maintain an award-winning appearance at all times."
