Get On Unit back on the streets

Get On Unit back on the streetsThe Get On mobile information unit is back on the streets of Edinburgh to provide a wide range of outreach advice to anyone who would like to improve different aspects of their lives. The Get On unit aims to provide a relaxed, straight forward way for people to find out about different services that can help them ?get on? in life.

Get On began originally as an outreach exhibition unit to promote a range of services for job seekers, in 2004 and 2006. Then, staff from the Council?s Economic Development team along with Access to Employment organisations spent 12 weeks on the road, registering over 1,200 people looking for work. About half of those people were able to take up access to work opportunities suited to their needs.

However, in response to the kinds of questions that people had, Get On now provides a much wider range of support and referral, including service advice on health, life and money matters, as well as jobs. Now, virtually any service (local, city-wide, national) that may have an impact on a person's overall employability will have a place.

Get On works with the 12 Neighbourhood Partnerships to link up with local services in each area. And the unit will constantly improve in response to feedback from users, to provide the right mix and promotion of services for every community.

Almost every day over the coming 12 months, Get On unit will be out, visiting local areas including Portobello, Oxgangs, Leith, Muirhouse, Pilton Craigmillar, South Queensferry, Wester Hailes, Kirkliston, Currie, Tollcross and a wide variety of community led events across the city. The Unit will be launched at 10.00 on 1 June 2009, at Pentlands Community Centre, and any interested Community Council members are welcome to attend.
