Gardening on someone else's patch of land such allot of fun

Green-fingered enthusiasts are helping a new solution to the city's allotment shortage take root – by digging up the gardens of pensioners struggling to cope.

Demand for allotments across Edinburgh has sharply increased over the last three years, partly to a rise in television programmes promoting home-grown food.

More than 1400 people are on the council's waiting list, with fewer than 90 getting land each year.
