Festival Square screen scheme gets green light

A giant television screen to be erected in Festival Square later this year as part of the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics has been given the go-ahead.

The city council is hoping to receive funding from the Olympic Committee to put up the huge viewing screen in the city centre.

It must be able to have the 25 square metre screen in place by April 30 this year in order to qualify for funding and has now agreed on the Festival Square site.

The screen will be used to show coverage of sporting and cultural events, such as Scottish international football and rugby matches, over the next three years. In the summer of 2012 it will show highlights of the London Olympics.

There had been some concerns about the screen, with the Sheraton Hotel asking for more detail on how events and crowds will be handled and Tollcross Community Council claiming it would be a noise nuisance to residents.

Despite this, the council's planning committee granted planning permission and the council will now work to finalise funding.
