Edinburgh students help to raise thousands for breast cancer charity

People from across Edinburgh including students from Heriot Watt University helped to raise over £12,000 for leading charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer by taking part in a special one-off fundraising event. The ‘10k for £10k’ Challenge involved walking, running or cycling for 10k around Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy and was a huge success with over 140 people of all ages, most dressed in pink, taking part.

Edinburgh student Daniel Bissett recruited his friends to get involved in the event which was organised by his mother Dorothy, who thought up the event after her own battle with breast cancer. Dorothy wanted to fundraise to fight back against the disease and gave herself the huge target of raising £10,000 for Edinburgh-based charity Breakthrough, who fund Scotland’s only breast cancer research unit. She initially asked 50 people to try to raise £200 each and so far an incredible £12,000 has been raised through donations and sponsorship.

Dorothy said: “People have amazed me with their generosity so I would like to thank everyone who helped us raise this money for such a good cause. After my own diagnosis in 2008 I quickly realised the huge importance of research - I believe it's our way of fighting back. Everyone involved has put in so much hard work and I hope that with the money still pledged our final total will be much higher.“

James Jopling, Fundraising Manager for Breakthrough Breast Cancer in Scotland was present on the day and said: “This is an incredible achievement. We are so grateful for the hard work and support of Dorothy and everyone in Edinburgh who contributed to such a fantastic event. Breakthrough is working across Scotland to ensure women can have a future free from the fear of breast cancer, but we can’t do it without fundraising events like this. Every penny that’s raised will take us a step closer to beating breast cancer for good.”
