The new cemetery is the first in the city for 50 years

Edinburgh is to open its first new cemetery for half a century.

The council had been searching for a suitable site since 1992, with the city's main Mortonhall cemetery due to run out of grave space within months.

The new 15-acre site within Craigmillar Castle Park, which has about 5,000 burial spaces, will open in mid-January.

It is hoped that the new cemetery, which has not yet been named, will serve the city for the next 50 years.
