Business As Usual For Princes Street

posted 24 Feb 2009, 10:59 by myEdinburgh Admin   [ updated 24 Feb 2009, 11:00 ]

Data collected this morning and over the weekend indicates traffic diversions from Princes Street have not affected the number of people coming into the city centre. On George Street, footfall counters recorded a 40% increase in visitors, and a 17% increase in St Andrew Square. Frasers and M&S on Princes Street were still attracting shoppers as they also recorded modest increases.

There was also a marked increase in users of the park and rides this morning with 50 more cars than normal at Sheriffhall and Fountainpark, 20 more at Wallyford and 15 more at Hermiston.

Council Leader, Jenny Dawe, said: "Our campaign to inform users of the city centre about new bus routes and traffic diversions also made it very clear that there is good pedestrian access to Princes Street and that the shops are open.

I am also encouraged that, by the end of today, around 4000 people will have visited the mock-up of the tram outside Jenners. The feedback from the public has been very positive and I am pleased that so many people are taking an interest."
