Barrett calls for bingo boost from Brown

John Barrett, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, is taking action to secure the future of bingo clubs in Edinburgh after new figures showed that there are now fewer than 600 left in the UK.

Over 60 have closed in the last two years and increases in bingo duty are forcing many formerly profitable clubs to the edge of closure.

Mr Barrett has signed a petition of MPs urging the Prime Minister to freeze the planned increase in bingo duty.

Mr Barrett said:

“Bingo may not be the most fashionable of causes, but in many areas, the bingo hall can act as a focal point for the community.

“There are only 8 bingo halls left across the city and the recent decision to increase bingo duty from 15% to 22% will put the rest under even more financial pressure.

“The bingo industry is not a cash cow that the Government can use to raise revenue. All that this latest rise will do is force more bingo halls to close their doors leaving more gaps in high streets across Scotland.”
