Edinburgh's Winter Wonderland was forced to close this afternoon due to high winds and heavy rain.

Princes Street Gardens East and West were closed at 3pm, along with the German Market on the Mound and the funfair alongside Princes Street.

A city council spokeswoman said: "Due to adverse weather conditions today, we have regretfully had to close Edinburgh's Christmas sites at both East and West Princes Street Gardens.

"This is the first time the Gardens have been closed this festive season and while we are disappointed at having to shut the attractions, public safety is always our top priority. We hope to be in a position to reopen the areas for everyone to enjoy as soon as we can."

The Met Office is predicting that the rain will ease over the next few hours, with winds dropping overnight.
