Backing for homeless aid plan

City homeless charity Streetwork has backed a £14 million new scheme to help people facing homelessness in the wake of the credit crunch, which has been launched by the city council.

The services will assist those on the brink of losing their homes and follows an increase in the number of people seeking advice after having their houses repossessed.

Over recent years city leaders have virtually eliminated rough sleeping in Edinburgh and the focus will now switch to a new early prevention initiative. Streetwork has been appointed by the council to provide Visiting Housing Support to people in housing crisis.

The services will focus on supporting people in their homes.

Streetwork chairman Chris Perkins said the scheme was "a huge step forward in the way the council and other organisations help people stay in their homes."
