Whether you take a book from any of Edinburgh’s many libraries, work out in the City’s excellent sports facilities, enjoy the availability of the Arts or unwind in the parks and woodlands, then the City of Edinburgh Department of Culture and Leisure have made these available for you!
There’s far more to Edinburgh than the Royal Mile and New Town . In fact Edinburgh has over 4,500 acres of parks, open spaces and woodlands across the city. The Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill, and Corstorphine Hill were both designated Local Nature Reserves in 1993 because of their importance and significance as wildlife habitats. In addition 9 Sites of Special Scientific Interest are found within the city and a further 31 Urban Wildlife Sites. Edinburgh’s coastline is part of the Firth of Forth Special Protection Area.
Hermitage House within the Hermitage of Braid is the headquarters of the Edinburgh Ranger Service. Only minutes away from the centre of Edinburgh the house is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Edinburgh boasts a green heritage not only supporting a wealth of wildlife but as places for people to enjoy.
The City of Edinburgh Countryside Ranger Service are here not only to care for important wildlife sites, but to provide opportunities for people to enjoy these special places. This involves us in everything from the preparation of management plans, to designing environmental education programmes, offering opportunities for local communities to participate in looking after their countryside, leading guided walks and events as well as providing interpretive material for our 2 visitor centres - Phew!
