They are some of the cutest animals in the world, an icon for WWF and beloved of the Chinese nation, but is it right to keep pandas in Edinburgh Zoo?
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has offered to fund work at Wolong Research Centre in Sichuan Province in China, where the iconic animals are facing extinction in the wild, in exchange for a pair of pandas for Edinburgh Zoo. It hopes to be able to begin a captive breeding program. Animal rights campaigners are outraged at the idea of keeping the animals, which are notoriously poor breeders even in their natural habitat, in captivity in Scotland and claim the move is all about attracting more visitors to the zoo.
