A TEENAGE volunteer worker from the Lothians has been shortlisted for a national award.  David Montgomery, 18, from Tranent, has been shortlisted for the young volunteer of the year prize at the 2008 Young Scot Awards.

The Ross High School pupil devotes hours of his spare time to helping others in three voluntary roles across East Lothian, including East Lothian's Special Needs Playscheme, which offers one-to-one support for disabled youngsters.

He also works as a "befriender" to disabled teenagers with East Lothian Council's family support team and volunteers with North Berwick's Star Youth Club.

The teenager said: "I volunteer because I want to help disabled kids overcome things, and seeing how happy they are when we play games with them or head out on trips is great."

He added: "I was absolutely speechless when I found out that I had been nominated."

David was nominated for the Young Scot award by Marisa Carradice, a support worker who introduced him to the council's family support team.

David will discover whether he has beaten the two other finalists at a ceremony later this year.
